where content, (AI) technology and business come together
BK Media is an independent consultancy founded by Bert Kok, a Dutch media and AI specialist with a strong background in journalism, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The company operates at the intersection of media, technology, and education, supporting organizations in navigating the digital transformation of journalism and storytelling.
Bert began his career at the Dutch news agency ANP, where he gained extensive experience in news production, editorial workflows, and content distribution. Later, as the founder of several media startups, including imgZine (now Relevance by ORTEC), he helped pioneer one of the first platforms for personalized digital publishing—bridging data, design, and editorial insight to deliver tailored content experiences.
In recent years, Bert has worked as a lecturer and coordinator of the Entrepreneurship & Innovation program at the School of Journalism in Utrecht (Utrecht University of Applied Sciences). There, he also helped establish the AI Proeflokaal—a pioneering lab where students and teachers explore the use of Generative AI in journalism and education. Within this initiative, he developed AI-powered chatbots and agents to support editorial workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and enhance learning experiences.
Currently, Bert is also involved with Media Campus NL, a collaboration platform for the Dutch media sector. As Project Manager and Innovation Broker, he advises media organizations and SMEs on business development, AI adoption, and immersive storytelling (VR/XR). He plays an active role in connecting creative, technological, and journalistic disciplines to accelerate innovation across the media ecosystem.
His AI expertise is deeply rooted in the media domain. Bert designs and implements AI-driven newsroom tools that enhance editorial decision-making, such as systems based on the User Needs Model 2.0 and AI agents that can analyze audience behavior, suggest follow-up angles, and optimize newsroom output. He also trains journalists and educators in prompting techniques, AI ethics, and workflow design, showing how Generative AI can serve as a creative and analytical collaborator rather than merely a writing assistant. His work bridges the gap between journalistic integrity and technological capability—helping media organizations adopt AI responsibly, transparently, and effectively.
His expertise lies in translating emerging technologies into practical tools and strategies for media professionals, combining a journalist’s curiosity with an entrepreneur’s mindset. Bert regularly gives workshops and training sessions on AI prompting, editorial innovation, and user-needs-driven journalism, both in academia and industry.
Bert holds an Executive MBA in Crossmedia and continues to bridge education, research, and professional practice to help shape the future of journalism. He currently operates from Hungary.
